Many coaches support a playoff in college football.

  • Joe Paterno
    • “To be frank with you, I don’t know what the reasons are not to have a playoff,” Paterno said during a speaking appearance in Pittsburgh. “You can talk about missing class and all that kind of stuff, [yet] you see basketball go on forever. You have a lot of bogus excuses, but obviously the majority of people who have the say don’t want it.” espn.com
  • Kyle Whittingham
    • “There really is no hard and fast true champion with the system that is in place” examiner.com
  • Urban Meyer
    • “I was a big proponent of the playoff in 2004,” Meyer said Monday. “On any given day, that team could have beat anybody in the country.” gainesville.com
  • Pete Carroll
    • “Who can properly figure this thing out? It’s so subjective, I don’t know how you figure it out. That’s why even presidential candidates want to see playoffs. Everybody wants to see ‘em. Then we don’t talk like this.” espn.com
  • Tommy Tuberville
    • “There is no reason on this earth why we can’t have the best four and then play one more,” Tuberville said. “That’s the legitimate thing to do. We added a BCS game — for what in the world? — I understand we’re avoiding lawsuits and making money. But let’s take care of the players.” espn.com
  • Steve Spurrier
    • “I think (the BCS formula) is so good they ought to take it to basketball, baseball, tennis and golf and make them go through it,” Steve Spurrier said sarcastically following its 1998 inception. “I’ve never understood why we’re the only sport in the world that doesn’t have a playoff.” usatoday.com
  • Mike Leach
    • “The thing that always interested me on this is: ‘Oh, my God! This has never been done! How can you suggest this? This has never happened in college football. “  “Everybody else does it this way. There’s nothing unique in what I’m saying. I’m the mainstream. This other system is not the mainstream.” denverpost.com
  • Nick Saban
    • So, if there is a down side to our system right now, that’s why I’ve always been kind of for the plus-one thing, where there are at least four teams involved in this. Maybe it wouldn’t be so much that way. Because if you had four teams, there would be one and two losses, would not knock you out of it and a lot more people would be interested and there would be a lot more teams in the end. So now we’re talking about the first game of the season, you’re out of it. It’s horrible. alabama.scout.com
  • Lloyd Carr
    • “In fairness to the players, we’re having too many situations where somebody gets left out” sportingnews.com
  • Bobby Petrino
    • The way it’s played out the last eight years, I think a Plus-One is a good idea if you could ever work it out.” “It would end all the controversy.” denverpost.com
